In the following article, I am going to demonstrate how to get a MobileMe like service for free. This means that on your iPhone/iPod Touch you will get over-the-air syncing of Mail, Contacts, and Calendar.
To begin you must have/get a Gmail account. Gmail will act as the web service for your mail, calendar, and contacts. You will be able to access your data here from any Internet connected computer. If you do not have a Gmail account go to http://www.gmail.com and click Sign up for Gmail.
Before beginning disable all Calendar and Contact syncing.
For email:
For calendar syncing with iCal:
For syncing with Address Book:
Now create an account at http://www.nuevasync.com.
Log in and configure your calendar and contacts to work with Google.
On your iPhone/iPod Touch/Windows Mobile device you should have already configured your mail client with Gmail's IMAP service. To set up calendars and contacts follow the instructions here.
This should enable over-the-air syncing for your portable device to Gmail, Gmail Contacts, and Goolge Calendar. This is available on the web at http://www.gmail.com. This should also sync with your local applications pretty close to instantaneously.
Note: At the time of this writing (12:30 UTC, July 31) nuevasync is experiencing heavy server load. This may hinder setup. However, I have finished and all is syncing well, in case you were worried.
