Europa springt op Web 3.0
Nog wat werk aan de winkel

Web 2.0 is nog maar goed en wel verteerd, maar volgens de Europese Commissie moeten we ons al schrap zetten voor de volgende grote webgolf. Europa heeft zelfs een concreet idee van wat Web 3.0 inhoudt.
Opmerkelijk, want de term is nog heel vaag en heeft geen vaste invulling. Het wordt bijvoorbeeld wel eens gebruikt voor het Semantisch Web-idee van Tim Berners-Lee, een van de uitvinders van het wereldwijde web.
"Web 3.0 betekent naadloos netwerken voor zaken, vrije tijd en op sociaal vlak overal en altijd met behulp van snelle, betrouwbare en veilige netwerken. Het betekent het eind van de kloof tussen mobiele en vaste lijnen", zegt Commissaris voor Informatiemaatschappij en Media Viviane Reding.
Overal en altijd
Het sleutelconcept in Redings visie op Web 3.0 is universele internetdekking. Met andere woorden, verbinden met het internet zal overal en altijd kunnen. Er komen ook meer online diensten die inspelen op uw locatie. De commissaris denkt daarbij ook aan 'het internet der dingen', het idee dat niet alleen computers maar ook andere toestellen met het internet verbinden.
Uw fiets is online
Het gaat dan niet alleen over mobiele telefoons of digitale televisies, maar ook om dingen als huishoudelijke apparatuur en slimme RFID-tags. En het gaat nog verder: in een discussiedocument ziet Europa ook bankbiljetten en fietsen aan het internet hangen. Het moet allemaal leiden tot "innovatieve diensten, meer efficiëntie en een hogere productiviteit".
Europa gelooft ook dat Web 3.0 betekent dat bedrijven steeds vaker online diensten gebruiken (zoals software-as-a-service), televisie mobiel bekeken wordt en dat er nog meer tijd op sociale netwerken wordt doorgebracht.
Input gevraagd
Het is een mooie visie en de EU gelooft dat Europa het voortouw kan nemen in de transitie naar Web 3.0. Maar tegelijkertijd is er een mindere zijde aan deze trend. De Commissie vreest dat een alomtegenwoordig internet een bedreiging voor de privacy kan betekenen.

Eee PC krijgt 3G
Mobiel internet wordt uitbreiding op WiFi
De Eee PC van Asus krijgt 3G-capaciteiten. Hiermee kan het toestel ook buiten het bereik van een hotspot draadloos op het internet.Concreet gaat het om 3,75G waarmee u tot 7,2 Mbps kunt downloaden en tot 2 Mbps zelf data kunt verzenden. Al is de werkelijke snelheid wel afhankelijk van het netwerk van uw mobiele operator.Asus implementeert de technologie in de Eee PC 901.

De aarde rond al voor Christus
De Oude Grieken wisten al dat de aarde rond was, en in 240 voor Christus had Erathostenes de omtrek ervan al berekend.
Dat Columbus uitgelachen werd omdat hij stelde dat de aarde rond was, is een fabeltje dat in 1828 werd verzonnen door de Amerikaanse schrijver Washington Irving die de heroïek van Columbus' avonturen nog dikker in de verf wou zetten.
De discussie ging helemaal niet om de vraag of de aarde bolvormig was, maar over hoe groot deze bol was: hoe groter die was, des te langer moest je zeilen om Indië via het westen te bereiken.

Android-telefoon ziet het licht
Toestel begin 2009 in Europa
Op een persconferentie in New York heeft T-Mobile samen met HTC en Google de eerste Android-telefoon voorgesteld. De T-Mobile G1 is een smartphone met aanraakinterface en een volledig uitschuifbaar toetsenbord in horizontale houding.
Het mobiele besturingssysteem Android werd ontwikkeld door Google en wordt gezien als stevige concurrent van Windows Mobile, Symbian en Mac OS X.
Het toestel is vanaf 22 oktober in de VS te koop, en in november volgt het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Voor andere Europeanen is het wachten tot het eerste kwartaal van 2009. Hoe de telefoon in België zal opduiken is onbekend. T-Mobile is de exclusieve aanbieder in de VS en benadrukt dat het apparaat is geoptimaliseerd (lees: exclusief) voor zijn eigen netwerk.
In België is de operator enkel op de zakelijke markt aanwezig. HTC verkoopt hier echter wel zijn toestellen. De kans is dus groot dat de G1 onder de naam HTC Dream, de naam die HTC hem gaf, hier binnenkort verschijnt.
Wat is de G1?
De T-Mobile G1, of HTC Dream, is een smartphone van 158 gram met
afmetingen van 112 bij 56 millimeter en 17 mm dik. Het aanraakscherm
meet 3,2 inch (81 mm) en heeft een resolutie van 320 bij 480 HVGA. In
het kloppend hart zit een 528 MHz MSM7201A-chip van Qualcomm, die wordt
ondersteund door 192 RAM-geheugen en 256 ROM-geheugen.
Verder heeft de telefoon een vrij intuïtieve interface met een klein bureaublad dat horizontaal te draaien is. Bij die houding kunt u via het toetsenbod iets preciezer tekst ingeven. Hier vinden we overigens een fysieke zoekknop terug.
Voor de communicatie buiten het bellen en sms’en beschikt deze telefoon over Bluetooth 2.0, al zou dit voorlopig enkel voor handsfree bellen zijn. Ook een WiFi- en GPS-chip zijn aanwezig. Foto’s nemen doet u met een 3,2 megapixelcamera en voor nauwkeurig navigeren is er een trackball. Volgens HTC kunt u met een volle batterij tot 406 minuten telefoneren en gaat het toestel tot 402 uur mee in stand-bytijd.
Toepassingen
Als Android-telefoon beschikt de G1 over een heleboel
Google-toepassingen. Zo zien we ondersteuning voor Google Docs, Gmail,
Youtube en Google Calendar. Tijdens de persconferentie bevestigde de
zoekgigant dat de telefoon ook Word-, Excel- en PDF-documenten kan
openen. Ondersteuning voor Exchange is er niet, maar het is niet
uitgesloten dat een ontwikkelaar hier een applicatie voor maakt.
De G1 speelt muziek af in de volgende formaten: AAC, AAC+, AMR-NB, MIDI, mp3, WMA en WMV. Bij het beluisteren krijgt u overigens meteen suggesties van Youtube. Voor video ondersteunt de telefoon MPEG-4 en H.264.
Leuk om te weten is dat de telefoon de Messenger-clients van Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL en (uiteraard) Google ondersteunt. Surfen doet u met Webkit, waar ook Google-browser Chrome op gebaseerd is. “Je kan het Chrome light noemen, het is iets kleiner en beter geoptimaliseerd voor het scherm”, zegt Andrew Rubin, Googles senior director voor mobiele platformen.
Android Market
In een kort introductiefilmpje doet T-Mobile een aantal hippe functies
uit de doeken. De applicaties spelen hierbij een zeer grote rol. Het
zal u dan ook niet verbazen dat er een Android Market is gelinkt aan
het toestel. Over de inhoud van deze webshop is echter nog maar weinig
bekend.
Page en Brin
Om de applicaties extra in de kijker te zetten, werd de persconferentie
halverwege opgevrolijkt door niemand minder dan Google-oprichters Larry
Page en Sergey Brin. Page benadrukte nogmaals dat het open platform de
sleutel is voor Android. Zo ontwikkelde hij zelf al een toepassing die
meet hoe lang een telefoon in de lucht blijft bij het gooien. Al weet
hij nog niet of deze ook echt zal verschijnen.

Acer lanceert eerste minilaptop met 3G
Toestel mogelijk aangeboden via telecomleveranciers
Computerfabrikant Acer lanceert wereldwijd de eerste minilaptop met ingebouwde 3G-kaart. Het toestel verschijnt eind oktober in de Benelux. De fabrikant wil de minilaptop, de Aspire One, ook aanbieden via telecomspelers zoals Proximus, Belgacom of Base.
Net als de meeste andere computerleveranciers zet Acer helemaal in op deze kleine laptops, ook wel ultra-mobile pc of UMPC genoemd. Het Belgische technologiebedrijf Option zal de inbouwmodules leveren voor de Aspire One.
De prijs is nog niet bekend. Het toestel zonder 3G, wel al gelanceerd, kost tussen de 300 en 400 euro, afhankelijk van specificaties en het besturingssysteem. De Linux-versie is bijvoorbeeld een stuk goedkoper dan de versie met Windows XP. Al blijkt de verkoop van de Windows-versie toch een stuk hoger te liggen.

Acer Aspire One : Linpus Linux Lite Review
A few weeks ago I became the proud owner of an Acer Aspire One Linux edition (reviewed here). Out of the box, this little wonder comes with the relatively unknown Linux distribution Linpus Linux Lite, which has been customized somewhat by Acer to make the most of the hardware in the Aspire One. The screenshot above and many more pictures of Acer’s version of Linpus are available at Golem.de, or you can find captures of the vanilla Linpus Lite 9.4 here.
The installation is indeed very ‘Lite’, and brings up the desktop from suspend in less than 10 seconds, or from cold boot in around 20 seconds. Part of the reason for these amazing startup times is that Linpus doesn’t attempt to start up a fully blown integrated desktop environment like Gnome or KDE, and is in fact based on XFCE, including the XFCE’s Terminal and Thunar Filemanager.
A big selling point for Linpus is it’s support for Asian languages out of the box, and the Acer version is no exception: I was able to type Thai characters with the default setup, and there are additional smart input managers for Korean, Japanese and both Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
Under the hood, Linpus is actually based on Fedora Core 8, which betrays its age a little since Fedora itself left that release behind some time ago. That does, however, mean that with a little digging it’s possible to turn on the more advanced features we are used to seeing on a desktop class machine. Pressing ALT+F2 brings up a useful launch prompt, from which you can start the XFCE preference manager that Linpus doesn’t reveal by default — the so-called “Advanced Mode Hack. From here, all of XFCE’s options can be customized, including turning on the right-click desktop menu. Having done that, all of Fedora Core’s installed applications can be found inside this desktop menu, including the Fedora Package Manager.
In theory, the sky would be the limit here. Unfortunately it’s not entirely safe to add a bunch of Fedora 8 package repositories and let fly, since the patched Linpus packages are sometimes lagging behind the Fedora 8 versions. As I mentioned in my Aspire One review, if you accidentally update to a Fedora GTK+, then Linpus XFCE breaks. Even so, yum is your friend: With appropriate care, and judicious force installing of Fedora packages that might otherwise try to make unnecessary updates to Linpus, it’s not terribly difficult to add any application you might be missing. By now, I’ve updated to Firefox 3 and Open Office 2.4, and replaced the Acer media player with VLC, as well as added all the compiler tools so that I can compile things from source if necessary. Despite all that, the machine is still running as smoothly, if not smoother, than when I first took it out of the box.
Another nice touch is the combined filesystem and internet search box included right on the desktop. The integration isn’t all it could be though, since the internet search merely launches Firefox to actually run the search. None-the-less, it’s quite nice to have it at your fingertips.
Acer ships a slightly out of date 2.6.25 kernel with the Aspire One, but they are sharing their patches, so there is no reason to avoid patching the Acer sources up to 2.6.26.5 and recompiling if you need newer kernel features such as reliable TrueCrypt support.
In the end, Linpus is a slightly outdated rpm distribution, and under any other circumstances I would certainly replace it with a modern debian distro myself. But, despite the fact that it is tuned for casual users, and that I’m not at all fond of rpms, I’m still happily using it 3 weeks later. Why haven’t I swapped it out for Ubuntu yet, you ask? Mostly because it is exceptionally well integrated with the Aspire One hardware. I can kill the wifi connection with a dedicated button and get feedback from the associated LED; the aufs overlay filesystem makes excellent use of the SD memory card slots; the webcam, soundcard and microphone work flawlessly for Skype calls; and not forgetting the fantastic 10 second wake-from-suspend. Linpus certainly isn’t a distribution I’d be eager to install on my own initiative, but there’s no doubt that with some love and attention from a netbook vendor, it can be an excellent operating system for making the most out of low-end hardware.

Subnotebooks in het najaar van 2008
Mind you dat er vanaf september een hele lading nieuwe netbooks komt. Asus zal bvb de N-serie lanceren: een reeks 'volwassen' 10 inchers met 320GB HD, er komen enkele nieuwe Eee's bij (hoofdzakelijk de bestaande modellen maar dan met een HD) en ze gaan normaal ook de S101 lanceren: een 'luxe' versie van de 901 met led backlit lcd (zoals de Mac Air), een lager gewicht en een 32 of 64GB SSD. Dell gaat tegen dan ook hun E series lanceren en Lenovo komt met de S10 op de proppen.

Delicious Library is a cool cataloguing tool that lets you index books, CDs, DVDs and games. Connect a webcam and the program scans its barcode, then retrieves all the relevant info about that product from the internet. With support for voice and Spotlight searching, iPod sync and even library-style checkout functions for lending items to friends, it's a powerhouse.
Blogger widget for OS X
Freeware, Mac OS X 10.4+
Blogging is well-established, but the act of logging into Blogger and reaching the compose page is tedious. Use the Blogger widget instead: just type or paste your text into it and post directly to your blog without opening a browser! It supports HTML tags and saving as draft for later editing. Facebook exporter for iPhoto

Editing, tagging and exporting images before uploading to Facebook can be a drawn-out process. This plug-in appears in iPhoto's Export panel, and lets you select multiple images, pick or create a new Facebook album and add captions to the images prior to upload. You can also tag friends so the pictures arrive at your Facebook account already formatted.

Op sociale netwerken kun je in allerlei vormen berichten achterlaten. Via zogeheten krabbels of via hun eigen email systeem. Nu is er een website die mensen in staat stelt om vooraf berichten te schrijven, die pas worden geplaatst op het tijdstip dat je vooraf instelt. Je kunt dus vandaag een bericht schrijven, en dat automatisch laten plaatsen in het midden van de nacht.
De dienst is zeer populair in de VS.Het bedrijf heet Sendible.com. Hoewel er al andere bedrijven zijn die een vergelijkbare dienst aanbieden - zoals HelloTXT en Tweetlater - biedt Sendible verreweg de meeste mogelijkheden. De site werkt met Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, en binnenkort ook op Friendster, Xing, Hi5 en Orkut. Hyves is vooralsnog niet beschikbaar.
Op de site kun je een hele kalender aanleggen met de berichten die je wilt versturen. Zo kun je vooraf bijvoorbeeld al berichten voor verjaardagen inplannen, maar ook mensen voor de gek houden met berichten waarvan het lijkt alsof ze om 5 uur in de nacht zijn geschreven.

Google Chrome staat voor sober en snel surfen
Er werd al lange tijd gefluisterd dat Google sleutelde aan een eigen browser. En nu is hij er eindelijke, met de ronkende naam 'Chrome'. Maar waarom zou u uw vertrouwde Internet Explorer of Firefox inruilen voor dit browserprogramma?

Chrome past duidelijk in een groter plan van Google, om surfers zoveel mogelijk bloot te stellen aan Google-sites (met de bijhorende advertenties). Paradoxaal wil het internetbedrijf ook de rol van de browser daarin minimaliseren. Of liever: de browser minder zichtbaar te maken en zo de grens tussen webdienst en software verder op te heffen.
Leuk voor Google natuurlijk, maar is dat reden genoeg om Internet Explorer of Firefox te vervangen door Chrome? Microsoft ontvangt patent voor Page Up/Down-functie
Eerst gesignaleerd begin jaren tachtig
Microsofts nieuwste patent beschrijft een technologie waarmee u met een knopindruk een pagina omhoog of omlaag scrolt. Controverse gegarandeerd, want de Page Up- en Page Down-knoppen sieren al meer dan een kwarteeuw pc-toetsenborden.
US Patent-nummer 7.415.666 beschrijft op een weinig heldere manier een "methode en systeem in een documentenviewer om een substantieel en exact stuk te scrollen in een document – zoals een pagina – ongeacht of de zoom ingesteld is om een deel van of een volledige pagina te tonen".
Iets verder in het patent volgt een concreet voorbeeld. "Eén implementatie is dat een Page Down- of Page Up-knop indrukken een gebruiker toelaat te navigeren van elke verticale positie binnen de pagina naar dezelfde positie op de voorgaande of volgende pagina."
Het is niet de eerste keer dat Microsoft een patent ontvangt voor een technologie die schijnbaar al lang bestaat. Zo onstond in het verleden controverse over een patent voor een muiswiel waarmee gescrold kan worden en een ander octrooi dat het dubbelklikken beschreef.
Vaak werd daarbij het evaluatieproces van de Amerikaanse patentorganisatie sterk op de korrel genomen, omdat die patentaanvragen onvoldoende onderzoekt, bijvoorbeeld om te zien of de beschreven technologie niet al bestaat.
